Winter in Montana is not what most Southerners imagine, but don't tell them - they may want to come! I really do enjoy Winter in Montana. Snow, crisp mornings, the clearest of blue skies, and winter activities are awesome. Church work is not bad either. I grew up in the South, have spent most of my ministry in the South, so I know what many experience. If the weather man says on the Saturday evening news that it might snow, Sunday attendance will be low (even if it doesn't snow). In Montana, we have some of our best days with several inches of fresh snow on the ground.

Last Wednesday was a great "Winter in Montana" evening. The AWANA program at South Hills is in full swing. There were 51 kids involved in AWANA, and we baptized two of them!! Two young ladies who have been in our ministry for a long time. It really was neat to see 50 kids gather around the portable baptistry to see their friends publically proclaim Christ in Baptism.
Merry Christmas
Steve in Montana

SUMMERTIME VBS AND GOD'S BLESSINGS
My last post, May 8th, I wrote of God's amazing activity - activity that can only be explained as an act of God and not our plans or agendas. Well, God is still working! SHBF just finished VBS what a blast!!! Our church that averages about 100 in worship, averaged 95 in VBS students - about 160 workers included. Family night saw over 200! There were some saved in VBS, some families touched who need a church home, and the carry over led to some youth saved at a campout.
SHBF is privileged to have 2 NAMB supoorted summer missionaries. One of the reasons our church supports the Cooperative program and our missions offerings is the direct result we see. NAMB transports the missionaries to the field, provides insurance, and a small stipend. We could not have these guys without NAMB.
Here is praying that you see God working in your mission field this summer.
Steve in Montana

WATCHING GOD WORK

Just like the Christian life that others experience, the life of a Pastor has its ups and downs. Sometimes we want to quit. Sometimes we "grow weary in well doing." Sometimes we work very hard and see no results. Sometimes we just pray a lot. And sometimes God allows us to see Him work in our midst. It is all a part of the journey called "walking with God." One of my seminary professors, Dr. Steve Wilkes, told me one day "You can't plant a mega-church. God calls us to plant churches and in His plan and purpose some of them grow very large."

As a pastor, of course I want to see the church I serve grow. I want to see people enter the Kingdom. I want to see life change. Right now God is allowing me and the rest of South Hills Baptist Fellowship to see Him work. For five straight weeks we have seen people make public decisions - salvation, baptism, church membership in our Morning service. I wish I could give you our "Four Step Growth Plan," but I can't - I don't have one. I am not a better preacher now than the five straight weeks that no one walked the aisle. We do not have a new outreach plan. We have not saturated our community with a special blitz. We have prayed. We do not normally have evening services, but several weeks ago one of our church council members had a burden that we needed to pray for the body. We set aside a Sunday night for a concert of prayer. The body showed up in a big way. We prayed. And then it happened - God just started visibly working right in front of us.

It is exciting. I wonder what else God is going to do. I pray that I will not mess it up. And I am thankful for seeing people respond to God.

Steve

REVIVAL IN THE CHURCH

Our church - South Hills Baptist Fellowship just finished the last of four days of meetings with Evangelist Rick Ingle and Music Evangelist Phillip Willis. I know Revival will continue because of the faithfulness of God's people to respond to His blessings. A 17 year old young man and two children made public their professions of faith in these services. Many Christians came to the altar each service to pray, and many had invited friends. One young lady, who is new to the area, came at the invitation of a co-worker. She was so excited when she drove up and saw "Baptist" in the name because she was raised in a Baptist Church in Kansas. (Glad we had not taken it out of our name because she said she would be back.)

These days were a vivid reminder of God's plan. Some are retreating - "when you preach the truth, people leave, so we are satisfied with our Holy Huddle." Some have a persecution complex - "It is so hard in Montana." But God is true to His plan and promise. Everywhere, in every culture, in every time that the Gosple is faithfully preached some are saved.

I have personally been challenged to be more faithful in my witness. Bro Rick Ingle preaches the same message, in the same way, from the same Bible in pioneer areas as he does in the "Bible Belt." In recent years he has seen a greater response in pioneer areas than in the South. God help us all to trust Your powerful Word to build Your Kingdom.

VBS

Tonight will be night three of Saddle Ridge Ranch - VBS -! Last night we had 70 kids present and over 50 workers! Having a great time. We are also blessed to have our summer missionary (Trevor) and our 4 Associational missionaries helping. We will close out Thursday night. VBS is still something God uses to reach people for salvation. Want to know one reason VBS is successful? Look at my numbers above - no, not the 70 kids - the 50 workers. VBS is a good example of the body of Christ working together for a common goal, and when that happens God shows up. VBS is expensive, time consumming, tiring (exhausting!!!), and I love it.
Steve

SBC MISSIONS

I have just returned from an East Asia Summit sponsored by the IMB in Oklahoma City. I was there representing the Treasure State Baptist Association. Last Fall, we had two of our M's from East Asia at our Associational Annual Meeting. Out of that time, I felt our TSBA should consider how we could partner with East Asia. Our DOM, Steve Fowler agreed, and so we began to pray. A couple of months ago, Steve Fowler was encouraged by an M on the field to go to the Summit, and because he was to be out of State, I was asked. I want to share just a couple of thoughts I have had so far.
First, it may seem a bit audacious for a small association of small Baptist churches in a pioneer State to even consider a partnership. I felt that way. I was even thinking that way on my way to OKC, but it did not take long to realize it can be a perfect fit. I found that the preferred size of teams in East Asia is about 5-8. A group of two is great. I thought "Wow, we can do this."
Second, as I was growing up, even in college and seminary, the prospects of going to most of East Asia were very poor as Communism had slammed the curtain. Today there is a small window, but it is relatively easy to go anywhere in East Asia that God may lead.
Third, I am excited, EXCITED, about being Southern Baptist. I was able to meet a number of our M's at the Summit. I cannot tell you how impressed I was with them. They are worthy of our dollars, our prayer, and our partnertship.
Steve

HEALTHY CHURCHES

This last weekend I had the privilege of attending a pastors' retreat with my fellow ministers in the Treasure State Baptist Association in Montana. It was a good time of fellowship as well as being sharpened in ministry. Glenn Daman, author of several books, including Shepherding the Small Church, was our speaker for the retreat. I really enjoyed hearing from someone who had a passion for ministry to small churches in small areas.

Although I enjoyed Glenn immensely, there was a spirit in the discussion that caused me some alarm (and this was not Glenn's take on things). It seemed to me that many of the participants were applying the truths of a country song to the church, you know the one, "It's Alright to be Itty Bitty." It is alright to be small. I served in a church plant that had 12 charter members and met in a storefront. We were small. But God honored His Word. Wherever, whenever the Gospel is preached, God will save some and will build His church.

I believe that the pendulum has swung away from the excesses of the Church Growth Movement that placed more weight on pragmatism than on Scripture (a needed correction), and is now swinging to far. We live in a nation that is growing more lost every day - in this setting it is NOT okay for baptism's to continually decline. Montana is often listed as one of the least evangelized states in the country, so it should be ripe for healthy, growing churches. My goal is not a mega church. Dr. Steve Wilkes was my D.Min adviser at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary. His second Doctorate was in Church Growth from Fuller Seminary. He was a church growth guy. He also said to me, "God did not call us to plant mega churches. He calls us to plant churches. Some of those may grow to be large churches, but it is a sovereign act of God when they do." He went on to say that the goal should be healthy churches and healthy churches will grow. A good book is Ken Hemphill's book, The Bonsai Theory of Church Growth.

It is okay to be a small church, a good thing since most churches are small, but it is not good to plan to be small. Being small is not a badge of honor (nor is it a dishonor). We all need to trust God's power to save the lost and build His church when His Word is preached. To do that we must make sure that there are lost people hearing our message, and that happens when we get out in the community. This is a challenge to my heart more than a challenge to anyone else. The Great Commission is a command to go - it is not a theology to be discussed behind the walls of the church, it is not a doctrine to be studied in order to gain a certificate, but it is a Christ given command that must be obeyed - and to obey we must GO!

Pray for me that I will GO this week.
Steve

FABULOUS FEBRUARY

Wow! February already! February is a special month for me. Three special people events occur in February. My Dad, Jim, celebrates his birthday today, February 10. The longer I live and the more people I talk with, the more I realize that I have a special Dad. I believe that most people have their view of God at least partially through their earthly father. If a person had a distant and detached father, they look at their Heavenly Father that way. I have a father who loves, provides, cares, protects, and is wise in leading without being overbearing in directing. Thanks Dad for showing me what a man looks like, and for helping me form a more accurate picture of our Heavenly Father.

The first date Marla and I ever had was a church Valentine's Banquet. Here we are, after almost 27 years of marriage, and on Sunday night we will be at a church Valentine's Banquet!!!! God has given me many wonderful experiences. I graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University, and Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary (two times) - wonderful times. I have served six churches in full-time ministry, and all of them are special to me. I have been on mission trips, served as a church planter, and led many to Christ - but God's gift of Marla to me is the best.

Andrew, the oldest, was born in February. He and his Grandpa have shared many birthday parties because their birthdays are only 1 day (and 51 years) apart. I cannot imagine the last 20 years without Andrew. He has been a big part in the ministry and mission endeavours of our family. He will be here next month with a Baptist Collegiate Ministry Team from the University of Arkansas - how cool is that!?

February can be a strange month. Hints of warmer weather followed by some of winter's coldest blasts. Sunshine and snow. It revs us up and then lets us down. But for me February is one of my favorites. Interesting that as we walk with God through life He can take the Februarys of our days and make special blessing of them. Walk with God and find what good things He has for you.

ALL THINGS NEW

Well, here we are, 2010, a new year. The start of a new year reminds that with God we can have a fresh start. This last year was a year of "NEW" for us. A new place of ministry (Montana City, Montana), a new church (South Hills Baptist Fellowship), a new State (Montana), new experiences (floating the Missouri River, freezing on the 4th of July, fly fishing), new friends, new church family, and a new HOME. We closed the first part of December and will move this weekend!!!!

We had a great Sunday on the first Sunday of 2010. It was great because of testimonies to the power of God and a sense of expectation for new things in our Church Family. I hope you are enjoying the freshness of the Spirit of God in your life.

THE JOY OF MINISTRY

I follow several blogs, written by pastors, and find a disturbing trend. It seems that most of the pastors I know express only the difficulties of ministry. Now, I'll be the first to admit that I am a "glass is half full" kind of person. I have faced my own share of difficulties in ministry, but that is really a small slice of how I would describe my life.

Yes, I have had disgruntled members in my office who (in their own eyes) represented lots of others. I have had notes passed to me on prayer request cards that were critical of staff, music, sermons. I have had a few leave the church (some the local body, some just quit going anywhere). All of these things hurt. My sons have not always understood why we did not have newer cars, bigger vacations, etc. But, the good of ministry FAR outweighs these negative experiences. If one of my sons felt called to be a pastor - I would be happy for them - not only because of God's calling, but because of the joy I knew they would experience. I wake up most every day and thank God for calling me to ministry. If I was talking with young seminary students I would tell them about the joy of ministry.

Let me share a few of the joys of ministry!! This past Sunday a man I had talked to early in the week accepted Christ as Savior! A children's SS class gave me a giant card for Pastor Appreciation they had made. The church had a dinner in my families honor to show there love. Several others gave cards, gifts, and very warm words of gratitude. I can see several young adults from other places I have served who are serving Jesus today. I have been able to experience lots of things with my family. My 12 year old son has been on more mission trips than many adults. My 19 year old has been on a trip to Thailand. We have friends and all over the world.

Is ministry hard? Sure, sometimes. Is it draining? Yes. Is it fun? YOU BET! Maybe I have just served all the good churches, but I don't think so. Sometimes, even preachers need to think about the Hymn "Count your blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done." I truly enjoy my calling and hope you do, too.

GOD'S SEASONS

I am sitting in my office this morning looking out at cold, gray skies, a little snow, and the evidence of the change of seasons in Montana. I do not know about you, but I like all the seasons. I like Fall - evidenced by crisp mornings, changing colors of the trees, the restlessness of the buck deer that roam the church yard, and the smell of a warming fire in the air. I also like Winter's cold, Spring's blossom's, and, yes, Summer's heat.

I see God pictured in the seasons as well. God takes His children and His churches through different seasons, each one with its own blessings, potential for growth, and fresh encounters with Him. I know, in my life God has led me through many different seasons. Some of them were a little like the 30 below of January in Montana, but when looking back I see some neat things God taught me in those times. (Can there be anything good about 30 below? Yes. Being inside with family or friends because there just isn't as much competition for time is one thing.) He has also led me through some seasons of warmth and growth - and these help color the cold seasons with a warmer color.

I believe God is leading South Hills through a special season right now. I believe it is a season of growing in unity and strength. He is also leading us in a season of growth. There are six or so couples and families that have been coming regularly. Several have stated their intention of making this their church home. Several of these are new Christians, but there have been a few strong believers come as well. It is exciting. Our new Sunday School class is growing. We had eleven last Sunday, and over half were not in any SS a month ago.

Here is one of the things I have learned about seasons: ENJOY THEM ALL! You may have a favorite, but learn to enjoy them all. Don't spend too much time fretting about what season it isn't, and live in the season that is now. Sometimes I want God to skip the present season for one more to my liking, but I am learning that He gives me what I need, and I can enjoy the season. Do I want to see my church grow exponentially? Yes, but I also enjoy the season we are in, learning each other, about each other. Growing deeper so we have a foundation that will stand when we grow upward and outward.

I hope you are in a pleasing season. I remember my first horseback hunt in Wyoming. David, one of my deacons, took this Arkansan out in the mountains, in the snow, at about 10 degrees. I could have focused on the hard saddle, stinging ice pellets, and burning fingertips, but instead I marvelled at frozen waterfalls, sure-footed horses, elk, and mountain grandeur. What made the difference? I was traveling with a companion. He knew the trail, the horses, and we were friends. On another hunt with David, we got lost and spent the night away from camp, but even that night is looked on with fondness because of companions. Make sure you have God as your companion, and then you can enjoy God's seasons.

Steve

SCHOOL STARTS

It is that time again. The start of a school year. Do you remember the beginning of school each year? Summer was over. Haircuts (for boys), school clothes shopping, school supplies (including those wonderful new boxes of Crayons). Some years were more eventlful than others. First grade - BIG. Junior High/Middle school - awesome - new building, a teacher for each class, lockers. High School - nearing the end - especially Senior Year (wooohooooo). College - a little fear, personal responsibility.

We have two in school. Andrew is beginning his Sophmore year of College at the University of Arkansas. He already knows after one day that it will be hard - three Lit. classes with a major paper in each, Spanish taught by a teacher who is fluent in Spanish (not so fluent in English). Benjamin begins Middle School tomorrow at East Helena, Montana Middle School.

Every time something new begins - new job, new house, new school year, new season of the year I can't help but think of the renewal that God gives to those who love Him. We can start fresh. We can change (actually be changed). Even if last year was a bad year, and even if it was bad because of my choices, I can experience freshness.

Just like that brand new box of Crayons. None missing. The colors of the rainbow (the 24 count is my favorite). No broken ones. All with sharp points. Just waiting to produce a work of art, or just to doodle a little. That is how it is with God's renewal. Opportunities abound. Everything new.

I hope you have found the ultimate renewal in Christ through salvation. He really does make all things new. If you are a believer already, I pray that from time to time you seek His ever renewing power.

Steve

THE IMPORTANCE OF RELATIONSHIP

God did not make us to be "Lone Rangers." He created us for relationship. His greatest gift is salvation - relationship to Holy God through the Son. His greatest gift to humankind is family - centered in the marriage relationship (and used by Him to illustrate the salvation relationship.) When we are saved, we become a part of His family - relationship. Jesus Christ gave us the Church - relationship. As a Christian I cannot function properly without being in relationship to the body.

When I think of the things that are most important to me, those things worth more than silver and gold, I find relationship. Of course my relationship to Marla - 26 years - and wonderful. I love my family. Recently we had the privilege of spending two weeks with our families. Last Sunday we spent the evening with Tracy and Kinsey. Tracy and I went to school and church together long before I knew Marla. She and Marla are good friends - her family used to live across the street from us when I was an Associate Pastor in Ft. Smith, AR. (We once went out of town and returned to find our house cleaned up - a gift from Tracy!) Why would we drive 2 1/2 hours one way for a few hours to visit? Relationship. I recently spent a few days in Cody, Wyoming for the 10th anniversary of YBC. It has been 6 years, but there is a special bond because of relationships. My first church to pastor was in McAlester, OK. Gwen and Pauline Engleman were special to Marla and me. It has been 18 years since I served there, but when I got an email from Pauline the other day it felt nice - relationship.

Don't miss out on God's best for you. Do earthly relationships sometimes sour? Yes, but don't withdraw. Instead, draw close to Him and His Church. He made you to enjoy these relationships. They are worth it.

The Difference Obedience Makes

I am preparing a special message for Sunday. I have the privilege of preacing at Yellowstone Baptist Church in Cody, Wyoming for their 10th anniversary. It was just a little more than 10 years ago when my family visited Cody and YBC the first time. I preached for them at a Mexican Restaurant. By October I was the first pastor of a small group of believers meeting in a storefront. What a wonderful four years it was.

The Scripture God has taken me to is to contrasting passages in the OT. The first recounts the children of Israel failing to go Canaan after the majority of spies said "We Can't." But forty years later the spies (only 2 this time) said it was a sure thing, let's go, AND the people went. What a difference it made when the people of God, hear the voice of God, and in the power of God, OBEY God!!!! If (when!) any of us as individuals or a church fail to follow God in obedience we miss God's best. What to do? OBEY.

God has a plan to bless us. He has given His promises. All that we need to do is Obey. Like the priests that bore the Ark - we must step out by faith, expecting God to make a way when there seems to be no way. Do you want to see God work in a greater way in your life, in your church? Listen to Him and Obey.

FEAR AND REVIVAL

On Wednesday Evenings I am leading a study called KNOW FEAR by Ed Young, Jr. This week we looked at the fear of failure. I believe that the fear of failure strongly affects Christians. I believe it especially can hinder those who have been saved a long time. Why? because we have suffered through failure, we have been hurt, we have been beat on by the world. When I was pastoring my first church, I was had no doubt that i would succeed. I am a bit more cautious now. That can be a good thing, but it can also morph into settling for mediocrity. Fear of failure is a real hindrance to revival. That leads many to say "We tried that and it did not work!" What we really mean is "We failed and don't want to fail again."

I want to see revival. I want to see my life touched by a fresh touch from God. I want to see the church I serve experience the wind of the Holy Spirit. Wind is unpredictable. Wind can be subtle or awesome. We can use the wind, but never control it. The Holy Spirit is described as "like a wind." I say - let it blow.

Is there a far that stops you from fully trusting God, walking with God, and seeing the greatness of His power? Allow Him to remove the fears, fill you up, lead you, and do wonderful, awesome things through you.

SUMMER IN MONTANA

It is Summertime in Monatana. Not just like Arkansas though. This morning it was 48 degrees, but I suppose we will reach the mid 70's. It is
about 100 plus in Arkansas right now. Benjamin
enjoyed a pretty good baseball season. He mostly played shortstop. He also pitched and caught. He even had a walkoff double in extra innings in a tournament.

South Hills Baptist Fellowship had a great VBS. We enrolled about 85 kids. We had a Block Party on Friday (cotton candy, sno-cones, climbing wall, bounce around, and live music) before VBS started on Sunday. We finished on Thursday with Family night (kids program and supper complete with a whole roast hog).

I pray that everyone is having a productive summer for the Lord. Andrew (oldest) has been on a mission trip and is now at Super Summer in Arkadelphia as a staffer. It has amazed this pastor when in the last few years I have talked with several once faithful Church members who have opted out of "the organized Church." It is interesting, though to see that work out in practice. Here are some examples: "Can our kids come to your AWANA, we do family/home church and they need more fellowship." "Can you take our kids to Youth Camp?" "Can we use you building for_____________?" And the list could go on. You see, many who have opted out find that there really is a need for the Body of Christ to come together as the Church, in a somewhat organized fashion.

Now, to my real reason for the post. I really want to speak to parents who have not left the church. Instill in your children a love for Jesus and a love for His Church. You do that by your own support and commitment, and by refraining from being hyper-critical. I do not put the Church above Christ, but I want all to know "I Love the Church." Not just the body of all the redeemed, but I love South Hills Baptist in Montana City, MT. I am praying that this summer God will do some "Body Building" in our midst.

Pastor Steve

GOD'S SPRING TIME

I don't know if I have a favorite season, but if I do it is SPRING. Spring is special for many reasons. The change of weather, warm days and sunshine, ranks very high. A couple of weeks ago Benjamin went skiing for the last time of the season. Snow in the mountains and shirt-sleeve weather in valley - wow.

I also enjoy seeing new growth. A little hint of green here in the North, calves in the pastures, thawed creeks running. Last week I went branding! I operated the squeeze gate as 110 calves were pushed through for various care and a brand. (They did not teach that in Seminary.) Rancher Tim's wife, Tracy, sent me home with a bundle of Pussy Willow branches for Marla. She said it was her confirmatin of Spring.

Of course, Spring also means Easter - RESURRECTION DAY. Nothing says new life like Easter! As nature around us renews, we are reminded that we can be renewed by the power of Christ who rose the third day. Our church celebrated this new life power with a full house and Baptism.

I hope you are enjoying Springtime - not just the season, but God's Springtime for your life.

HOW GREAT IS GOD

The choir of South Hills Baptist Fellowship will be singing next Sunday morning a musical titled "HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD." This last Saturday we were able to get outside the church walls and sing at two different retirement facilities. We will be singing at 2 or 3 others as well. We have witnessed an example of our Great God this month.

One month ago at a quarterly business meeting it was moved that we pay off our building. We owed about $25,000 and had about $29,000 in the general fund. (This would be awesome because a year or so ago the church owed about $100,000.) After discussion we decided to take a month to pray and listen to God. During the month we also promoted a special offering for the building. One of the reason some were hesitant was because they wanted to have a cushion in the general fund. Well, let me tell you about yesterday!!! After one month of praying, listening, and obeying we voted to pay off the balance. Now South Hills Baptist Fellowship is debt free, AND (are you ready) there is MORE in the general account than there was one month ago!!! How Great Is Our God! He is greater than I can ever comprehend. The problem is not the Greatness of our God, but the weakness of our faith.

My prayer is God - increase our faith. Your economy does not have recession. You own it all, all the time. Teach us to trust you more so we can declare to the world "HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD."

SETTLING IN

Well, it is March 10. We have also been to Great Divide, only about 30 miles from the house.

We have had some very pleasant weather, but today it is C - O - L - D. The high has been about 5 degrees and the windchill has been below zero all day. The only good thing is that it snowed a little. Andrew will be here for Spring break on Friday. We should get to do some good skiing while he is here.

Steve

COMFORT ZONES

Have you ever allowed God to take you out of your comfort zone? You know what your comfort zone is, don't you? It is that place where you feel at ease. You can relax. You move and work from your natural abilities. I believe that every believer should learn to identify their gifts. Spiritual Gifts are right in the middle of our comfort zone and we will find some of our most fulfulling ministry there.

But, sometimes God wants to stretch us a little. It is easy to become self-sufficient if we do all our ministry only where we are comfortable. Mission trips often pull us out of the normal routine and cause us to be more dependent on Christ. Maybe you always teach adults, or you do not see teaching as your gift. Why don't you consider that God wants to stretch you a little. Maybe you need to work with kids in VBS, or invite the youth to your home for a fellowship.

I have recently been stretched by God a little. After 19 years as a pastor, a Bachelor's Degree, a Master's Degree, and a Doctorate, God has placed me ---- as a------ Girl Scout Leader!!! Out of my Comfort Zone! I am serving as the leader for four girls who are working on their "God and Family" badge. Was I reluctant? A little. Am I nervous? A lot. Do I stumble a little. Oh Boy.
Like this past Sunday we were studying foundations. I asked for examples. I was thinking "concrete," "bricks," "steel," ("ARH, ARH, ARH"), but what did I get? Make-up. MAKE-UP! I do not even know if it is one word, two words, or hyphenated!! But guess what! I am having a ball. I would have never chosen "Girl Scouts" from a list of possible ministries to consider, but God did and He is blessing me. I know that my ministry will be richer, and my impact broader because of it. Why not ask God how He wants to grow and bless you outside your comfort zone?

GOD'S GOODNESS

This is South Hills Baptist Fellowsip. The church sits on about 15 acres bordering I-15. We are up on a hill. For those from FBC Waldron you will be interested to know that the church sees itself as a "Lighthouse," and there is a lighthouse on the Van. So, if you ever decide to get rid of the buses, bring them up.

This is the community around South Hills Baptist Fellowship. The mountains in the background have quite a bit of snow now. Last Wednesday there were 12 deer in the church yard. Thought I would include this so you'll know a little about us.
Have you ever been just blindsided by God's goodness? I was this week. On Monday morning I got up, took Benjamin to school, and headed over to church. It was cold. I decided to have breakfast at the "Hardware Cafe," owned by a church member. As I passed the bank, I noticed the sign said "-18." It was cold. I ate breakfast, drank coffee, and enjoyed talking with some folks. I dreaded going outside because it was cold. I drove over to church, went to my office, and turned on the heater. Looking out the window I saw a guy walking up the drive and I thought "It's Monday, cold, and here comes someone needing a handout." (I was partly right.) I let him in. Rudy was a nice looking young man, 19 years old, and wanted to talk to the pastor. We went in my office and for about 10 minutes he poured out his heart. He is a hockey player in Helena, recent High School grad., trying to earn a college scholarship. Things just were not working out for him, he was miserable. I briefly shared the Gospel with him and he prayed to receive Christ. I gave him a Bible and he said "How do you use a Bible." We talked some more and he left. God is so good. Pray that he will come to services.

Last night I taught the TNT 7th graders. After class a Dad brought his 8 year old son to my office. Nolan asked Jesus to be his Savior.

I like to be suprised, especially by God's goodness!! Hope He sneaks up on you this week, too.

SETTLING IN

Well, I guess we are starting to settle in a little to life in Montana. After a few weeks of moderate temps, today it is 6 degrees and lightly snowing. On the progress front, we did park the car in the garage! We are still kind of dealing with putting 2,000+ square feet into about 900, but it is getting better.

Marla had her first job interview at the State. Keep praying. If she gets one of those jobs, it will be a great help in the area of health insurance. It will also help us move to a larger place.

Yesterday I went to my first meeting with the Treasure State Baptist Association. We were in Three Forks, which is the head waters of the Missouri River. TSBA is a very large (land wise) Association of mostly smaller churches, but with a vision for impacting the world. It was good to ride with Sam and Mike, two Helena area pastors and get to know them a little.

On Sunday there were several visitors in the service. One couple spoke with me after the service. He is originally from Booneville, AR and she is from Little Rock. What a shock to meet someone who had actually been on Sawyer-Wright Field in Waldron!

Next week I'll post a picture or two. Marla, Benjamin, and I arrived Monday afternoon. Of course Andrew is in Arkansas, preparing for his second semester at the U of A. Benjamin started school today at Radley Elementary in East Helena. Radley is designated a "Blue Ribbon School." His class is on a field trip today studying rockets and space flight. Last night was the first night in AWANA here and the TNT Boys had about 14.

We move in tomorrow and Saturday. Three weeks ago I left Montana and it had been -30. Today it is near 50 and windy. Snow is melting away. (God wants us to have a good move in.)

Pray for us as we settle. Pray for Marla as she looks for a job. After 5 good years at FBC in Waldron, Arkansas we are moving to a new church, a new field, and new opportunities. We could stay at Waldron for many years if that was God's plan. We have many friends here, our sons like Waldron, and FBC is a good church. But, God has bent our heart towards missions areas. We spent four years in a new church start in Cody, Wyoming before coming to Waldron. Waldron is close to home and family, but God is leading us back West. I have accepted the call to pastor South Hills Baptist Fellowship, in Montana City just South of Helena.

We are excited and sad at the same time. South Hills is about 12 years old. FBC Waldron is 126 years old. It psomises to be a good leg of the journey. Isn't it interesting how God leads us? More and more I am learning not to get to focused on the destination, but on the journey. I am convinced that God's call is "walk with Me." No more specific than that. God called Abraham - "walk with Me to a place I will show you." Amazing as it sounds, Abraham went. God did have a destination planned, but all His chosen one needed to do was walk with God. Pray for us as we walk with God to a place He is showing us. There are many things He hasn't shown yet, but He will if we follow.

Are you walking with God. I invite you to come along as a Fellow Traveler in this journey called the Christian life.
Steve

FALL

Just some random ramblings as I sit in my office and think about Fall. I am hearing some construction work outside my office. FBC is building a multipurpose building for ministry. The steel is up, concrete poured, and walls ready to go up. I am thankful for those who have contriputed faithfully to finance this work. I am also thankful for some wonderful men, Neil, John, and Ken, who have worked tirelessly (without pay) to do so many things on the project. They are the ones making noise right now!

The leaves are really changing, the colors are beautiful. I enjoyed being in the woods last Saturday with Benjamin. He killed his first deer. He made a nice shot. He told me that he was a little sad for the deer. I told him that we should always respect life. God created animals for our benefit and intended them for food, but it was right to feel a little sadness. I hope he understood.

It is exciting to see God at work. It is encouraging to see those who are really trying to find their place in the work of the Kingdom. As a pastor, it is also a bit discouraging to see so many who just don't quite get it. But I pray for them.

Last week was the Arkansas Baptist Convention. It was a great time of fellowship and building up. The theme was "Reaching Genereation Next, Now." The speakers were a blessing. The business was short and sweet.

Fall is a time of reflection. As the trees give up their leaves that were previously new, green, and growing - I reflect on projects and plans of the last year, some grew and produced fruit, some were bit by the frost and never made it to maturity - but I give them up. I also look forward to the Spring when all things become new again with hope and life.

God, Thank you for the plans you have for me.

SCHOOL'S IN

Well, school has started and we have entered a new phase is family life. Benjamin is now in Middle School and Andrew is in College. I am already starting to identify with those bumper stickers that say "My Kid and Money Go to the U of A."
I am excited that in his first 3 days in Fayettville he attended two or three church type things (BCM, Student welcome nights, etc.), and he and his friends have a list of churches to visit and get plugged in. In a day when 70% of church member students leave the church during college and never return I have high expectations, not only for my son, but for many of the students that have gone on from our church.

Steve

UN - FRUSTRATIONS

I am amzed at the amount of response from my last blog. Some of you commented here. Some replied by email. A few responded in person. I really appreciated all the feedback. I especially enjoyed the encouragement. My favorite comment came from one who has had a very frustrating year. What could be more frustrating than the illness and treatment of your young child. Mrs. A. B., thank you very much for encouragement and perspective. You even offered a plan. I am going to offer it to those who find their way here. We all need to P.U.S.H. (No, I am not giving childbirth advice.) P.U.S.H means "Pray Until Something Happens." I am often guilty of "Stopping because nothing happens." I am going to PUSH this week, will you join me?

I am also unfrustrated because I baptized two brothers today, had a freedom in the pulpit, and had a good SS class with about 10 of the children in our Hmong mission.

"Dear God,
Thank you for allowing me to sometimes vent. Thank you for bringing "Fellow Travelers" across my way to encourage and challenge me.
AMEN"

By the way, I will spend this week with 1000 children in Siloam Springs at Kids Camp. About 20 of them will be from FBC. Far from frustrating - this will be a good week. I enjoy the innocence of their worship before God. I also enjoy seeing God call them to Himself. And He lets me be a part of it all!!

Steve

FRUSTRATIONS

Let me just start by saying this is a vent day. I am frustrated. I am frustrated with myself. I am frustrated with the church. I am frustrated with believers. Why am I frustrated? Probably for the same reason many are frustrated with me - we don't measure up. When pastors get frustrated, they are supposed to fix it. When members get frustrated, they vote with absence.

Why am I frustrated? God is doing so much, yet we get sidetracked by shortcomings. Our church is in the midst of a building program to provide space for some areas that God is truly blessing, but some want to complain. We have seen 12 saved in about a month, but some have their feelings hurt and can't rejoice. Our services were recently led by two college age men who are products of this church, yet some only see the negative. One of our own just went to South Asia as a Journeyman Missionary, but some are not moved. We have other recent graduates who are seriously considering mission service, but some say "what has the church done for me."

Yes, I am frustrated. Mostly by those who should be mature. Mostly by those who should be serving but are not. No, I guess I am mostly frustrated by me. How can I lead us differently? How can I lead us to renewal? And maybe I am just a little frustrated with God. Did I say that? Yes. "God, How long will you tarry?"

There, I said it. I vented. Got it out of my system. Now, go and have a nice day.

SUMMERTIME CHURCH

Church in the summer is a mixed bag. Yes, many church members are on vacation, doing some traveling, and sometimes just not quite making it to church services. As I have matured a little in my ministry and as a husband and father I have become less critical of vacation time away. As a matter of fact, my wife and I just spent a few days away for our 25th anniversary.

There are some positives as well. Today 20 of our middle schoolers will return from Super Summer, and 26 of our Senior High will go to Super Summer. That is a high point for our Youth. God does many wonderful things during these days at Ouachita Baptist University. In a couple of weeks we will hold VBS, then we will take off for Americus, Kansas to hold VBS for a small rural church. A week or two after that our children will attend camp in Siloam Springs.

I have learned that Summertime Church is not really a slump, it is just different, and that is okay.

Who's Growing Up, Anyway

My oldest son, Andrew is soon to graduate from High School. Pastors would do much less counseling if all sons were like him. I have seen him grow up spiritually and physically. This past Saturday he was invited, along with other Arkansas Honor Graduates to meet the Governor. I was proud he was invited, proud of him when he met the Governor, and proud when he and a friend asked me to take their picture snarling at the bust of Bill Clinton outside the gate!!

Andrew was an integral part of our ministry in a new church start in Wyoming. He has been on a number of mission trips, including and Associational trip to Thailand. Andrew will major in English Education at the University of Arkansas and seek to use his degree in missions.

As proud as I am of Andrew (and his younger brother, Benjamin - 10), it does pose a bit of a problem. I am sitting in my office. There is a lot of "noise" in the building. There is a Hmong language mission that has met in our church for the past year. I can hear their youth singing, playing drums. My son (Andrew) just finished leading the children in Sunday School. They were a little noisy when I first arrived. The adults have had their Sunday School and are in worship right now. I could sit in, but I would not understand the words. I have peeked in before and I do understand the "look" of worship on their faces.
In our service today there were several visitors. About 40 children were in children's church. I was not there, but I can imagine the noise.
I am so glad for the noise, I believe that God is pleased as well. There are churches all over today that are quiet this afternoon. They sit - clean, sterile, almost deathly quiet. I pray that God will bless us with more noise. I am glad that it is a chore to keep our building clean. I ask that God will show us how to make more trash.
Church buildings were made for one thing - people. People make noise. Our church is noisy this afternoon, I hope yours is too.

Parenting and the Church

Well, I am now the dad of an 18 year old son. (And so is Marla.) It really isn't so bad. We have two terrific boys - Andrew (18) and Benjamin (10). They are very different. They are also very much the kind of kids anyone would be proud to have. As I think of God's blessings, I wonder why we have such good kids. Of course, Marla is very much a reason. Every time I have talked to a pulpit committee, the question comes up "What role does your wife play in your ministry?" The underlying meaning is: "Does she play piano/organ?" "Will she keep the nursery?" "Will she teach children's choir?" My answer is always the same: "My wife's most important role is to love your pastor and make a good home for him and their children."
I also believe that the success of our kids is a reflection of the churches I have served. They have been loved and cared for, taught, and shown interest. Both of them are bright. Andrew is in the top three in his High School class with a chance to finish first. Benjamin is reading on a level 3 or 4 grades above his 4th grade. I would like to take credit, but I also realize they have been in a learning environment their whole lives. Sunday School, even at the youngest ages, encouraged their memorization, recognition of colors, numbers, letters.
Of course, their character has been largely shaped by the influence of the church. They have role models, what it means to be a Christian man, all around them.
So, as I contemplate my abilities to parent, I must say: "Thank you, Calvary Baptist Church in McAlester, Oklahoma. For a year you provided a comforting nursery." "Bluff Avenue in Fort Smith - you helped shape Andrew's life in so many ways. He was taught, learned to sing, learned to love church there." "Haven Heights, Andrew came to Christ and was baptized there." "Yellowstone Baptist in Cody, we were so far from home and you made our kids love it. There were surrogate grandparents. Decorate? Shop? Eat some fruit cake? Isn't it amazing what people will do because of Christmas? My wife is normally very che--er--frugal. She keeps after me to increase the firewood supply so the heat does not run. She stays afetr the boys to turn off lights and shorten shower times to save energy and water. She always looks for the best gas price. Then, all of a sudden, after Thanksgiving she puts on a push to drape our house in lights and runs them several hours each day. Why? Christmas! Marla really isn't a shopper, but she was up and shopping by 4 am on Black Friday. Why? Christmas.
You know, Christmas does bring changes. It can make the grouch temporarily kind, the selfish generous, and the cold-hearted nostalgic.
What has Christmas done for you? No, I am not talking about the Christmas holiday, but about the Christ of the holiday. Christmas really is about change. Jesus was born and changed the world. He even changed the way history is counted. Jesus. His parents were told to name Him "Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." Jesus. The name means "God Saves." Yahweh God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The "I Am." The source of all there is. This Jesus came and changed the world.
I hope He has changed your life. Not for a few days, but for eternity. That is CHRISTMAS.

As The Deer

Every Tuesday morning, our Minister of Music and I get together for a time of prayer. Mark is bivocational, so this time serves as our "staff meeting." It is also a time of Spiritual accountability and sometimes worship. Lately, we have been driving just to the edge of town where several whitetail deer live. We see them almost every time we go out. This morning as we were checking out the deer (and the police were checking us out) I thought of the 42nd Psalm - "As a deer longs for streams of water, so I long for You, God."
As we pray for Revival in our church, I am confronted with this question "Do we?" "Do I?" Do I really long for God. The deer will go to every length to find nourishing water. The deer will cross busy highways, slip by playgrounds, dog pens, and get out in broad daylight - whatever it takes to have water. The reason we do not have Revival is because we do not really desire it that much. Just this weekend I had the reality of how much we need Revival, and how much we do not seriously desire it when I was confronted to the pettiness of God's people. May God first make us thirsty, then Revive us.

The Main Thing

My friend, Hershael York, is a professor at Southern and the pastor of Buck Run Baptist in Kentuckey. He just wrote on his blog about leading a lady to accept Jesus as her Savior and how that never grows old. (http://hershaelyork.blogspot.com) When I read that I had a couple of thoughts. First, it has been a while since I have had the privilege of leading someone to Christ - I have been busy, but what about the main thing? Second, though some of Dr. York's blogs generate lots of comments, this one will not. Why? Even preachers are guilty of forgetting the main thing. We can get our blood boiling to dangerous levels as we discuss proper baptism, who may take the Lord's Supper, or what version of the Bible we use, but where is our passion (my passion) for the Gospel?

Don't misuderstand. There are discussions that we need to have on theological topics. Some want to say "Don't worry about doctrine, we will cooperate through missions." This idea always leads to a confusion about the Gospel and missions. What I am saying is that we should reserve our hottest passion, our zeal, and our energy for the main thing. Thank you Dr. York for reminding us of the main thing.
Steve

WHAT ARE WE THINKING

George Barna has reported a study that found Christian parents were not struggling with Spiritual things in raising their kids. They struggle with imparting morality, responsibility, honesty, and work ethic, but not so much spiritual things. Is it any wonder that some studies point that as many as 70% of those who are part of a Church as a teen drop out in their 20's --never to return.
About the only time parents visit the pastor or youth pastor about their kids is when they have gotten in trouble. Then the attitude is often: "You fix them, it's your job." (Unspoken is that it is the Church's fault.)
Why are we not more serious about instilling spiritual things in our kids? It is hard to teach what we either do not have or will not cultivate. If I want my kids to value Christ and His Church, I must value Christ and His Church. If I want my kids to see this in my life, I must model it for them. Going to Church once a month does not teach the importance of Church. Church on Sunday after being worldly on Saturday will not build strong Christian kids. As a matter of fact it only adds to their conclusion that its all a joke that should be forgotten.
I happen to live in a "dry county." That means no alcohol sales. Our county also has a fairly high teen drinking problem. Their number one source of alcohol? Parents ice chest, liquor cabinet, refrigerator.
Now for the good news. Some parents get it. There are some young families in our church that get it. They understand that the most important thing to pass on to their kids is a vibrant faith in Christ. They are struggling with how to do it, but struggling is often a good thing. There are some who are making lifestyle changes, career changes, financial decisions based on how it all fits in the Christian life. That excites me. It also challenges me as a parent. The other good news is that some youth get it, too. I see some youth who are taking a stand because of their faith. Some that are changing goals, college plans, college majors because of their faith (and sometimes their parents do not get it).
The Christian life is 24/7. It affects everything we are and do. Paul told the Christians at Corinth that they were "living letters" open and read by everyone that show the power of the Gospel of Grace. When we make it anything less - "What are we thinking?" The first generation that moved into the promised land made some compromises that doomed their kids. What were they thinking. In the next year we will hear 1,000 times about the national debt or the health care crisis or the global warming danger that we are passing on to the next generation, but that pales in comparison to the spiritual legacy we are leaving.

OUR MISSION

This afternoon the Waldron Hmong mission will baptize 5 new believers. This mission, led by Pastor Chue Xiong started early this Spring. They meet in our building. They are growing and now number about 95. Very soon we will begin assisting them with their children's Sunday School.

Really, this mission costs us nothing, maybe a little extra utility and an occaisional meeting conflict that must be worked out. I cannot think of anything that thrills our Father like a new congregation birthed in our facility. I hope the day comes when our buildings are bustling with activity every day of the week. Not the same people every day, but different ministries serving the Lord daily in our community. Now, not everyone is pleased. Some wonder why they do not just come to our services. I hope the day comes when we can work together more, but I see the need for people to hear the Gospel in their heart language. All I know is that 5 people will be baptized today that would not have without this ministry. Pray for them.

On this same day I will baptize a young boy saved in VBS. His sister was saved and baptized a year ago in VBS. Today the parents joined our church. I believ God is honoring our churches commitment to reach out, regardless of how it looks. He is blessing two congregations today. I hope you see His blessings, too.

Summer Highs

Wow! What a Summer. I am sure you feel like, too. I have had a great summer. In my last post I described how God worked out some details for our Thailand Mission Trip. Well, it was great. We ministered to about 2000 school age kids. We saw several professions of faith. We also saw a lady profess Christ. She had heard of Christ through another source and when we appeared at the village daycare she worked in, she asked the wife of the Thai pastor how she could become a follower of Christ.

(L to R - David, "Thai" Amy, Andrew. Amy is a member of Church in Udon Thani)
We also got to pass out sveral hundred gifts from Samaritan's Purse. This experience was heightened because Ruth Graham died about the time we returned to the States. Just knowing her heart for Asia and her sons work for Samaritans purse reminded me that kingdom minded people have their impact multiplied.

My son Andrew was sometimes treated like a Rock Star. Teenage girls in the schools would point and giggle. He did a great job in his ministry responsibilities. A couple of weeks after returning from Thailand our youth were at Super Summer. Andrew surrendered to missions that week. God's plan for our trip was bigger than our own.

As a Fellow Traveler, I try to keep my comments hear positive, but to be genuine we must acknowledge there are difficulties and disappointments. We are going to Thailand with 13 others to teach and share the Gospel. We had to have them in hand, and it was looking doubtful. After many calls in which I was told, "you will get them," I was finally told on Wednesday evening, "You might not get them before Monday." In the middle of trying to figure what to do, who to call, what strings could be pulled, considering other traveling options (leaving Tuesday, a day after the group would cost $1500 extra), I settled down to read the Word. God had already directed me to Elijah and God's "soft whisper." God's Word is more powerful than Wind and Earthquakes. I already had many people in prayer. As I prayed and listened, God led me to Scriptures that reaffirmed to me that God had been leading all the time. It was over a year ago that I felt led to go on an international trip. Then our Association begin to look at Thailand because some of our folks served there. God led me to make plans for my son, Andrew (who will be a senior) to go as well. My sister, Donna, who has had a remarkable Spiritual journey felt led to go as well. If God had led us then, He would get us our passports. I had called on Wednesday and been told, "They may not get done." I called Thursday evening, and they were in the mail. Actually they were with Fedex. Friday morning they were in Fort Smith. My niece went and "intercepted them" at the Fort Smith office, several hour before the promised delivery. Thank you God for answering, for leading, for giving me a peace BEFORE I had them. Andrew was taking tests Thursday. I texted him during the day that God would take care of it. Our God rules, and we get to be a part when we pray and have faith.

Arkansas Baptists

I have just returned form a two day conference on Associational work. The Arkansas Baptist State Convention sponsored the conference for DOM's and those who may one day be a DOM. Marvin Peters of the State office was the leader. I was impressed. Every speaker spoke with a passion. The passion was not about being a Baptist, it was not about being conservative, it was not about a doctrinal viewpoint, but a passion for reaching the not reached. One of the participants was Margaret Slusher. Now, what could a lady share with a room full of preachers about church and associational work? Lots! Marvin, thanks for inviting her, Margaret, thanks for coming.
I left the conference re-energized, recharged, and restored. Everytime I am around the staff of the ABSC I come away thankful. Guys, I am glad you are there. I am proud to be an Arkansas Baptist and proud to encourage the church I serve to support the ABSC.

Missional Uneasiness

Do you ever get uneasy about what you are doing? Maybe you get antsy? The one thing that makes me the most uneasy is a realization that I am not being Missional in my ministry. Some people are motivated by bigger churches, but I am motivated by missions. Of course I spent 4 years in a new church start. It was the most fulfilling 4 years of my ministry. I feel a tension in trying to lead an established church to be missional. Sometimes it looks very good, and some people really get it. I do not have all the answers, and definitely have not arrived, but I do have a restlessness. I know these are ramblings, but I felt a need to ramble a little. Maybe I am not alone in feeling this way. Maybe you want to be a Fellow Traveler in the ministry of the Kingdom. Let's go!

Fellow Traveler

GOOD TIMES

It has been a while since I have posted. But God is so good. Our church just celebrated its 125 anniversary! We had a capacity crowd, former ministers, memories, but most of all we had a good service. At the end of the service a young college guy I baptized a couple of years ago committed himself to God's will of vocational Christian service. We also introduced a group of about 45 Hmong Baptists who are meeting in our facility. God used these events to remind us that it was not what He had done that is important, but what He is doing. This weekend our Youth enjoyed a Disciple Now with 49 teens learning together. One young lady was led to Christ by some friends and a group leader. Yesterday she made her faith public, as did a young boy who was saved Wednesday night in AWANA, led to Christ by a faithful deacon. These really are good times. I am so gload that God sends them. I pray that He will send you some, too.
Steve

Moments on the Mountain

If you want to read a good, challenging, thought provoking book, get hold of "Do You Want To Go To The Mountain" by Thomas Young.
Thomas writes the book as both an exegetical look at the Transfiguration and as a confessional devotion. It will rev your heart. The thought that Jesus displayed His power before thousands and then a week later took three disciples up to see Him in His glory will give you quite time fodder for a while. Thomas points out that many of us are satisfied with the big "wow" and we fail to spend time in His presence. Many are satisfied with His blessings; He wants us to be satisfied with Him.
A question? Would you rather see Jesus with the crowds, or go to the mountain with Him? Thousands saw the miraculous feeding, three went to the mountain and saw His glory.
There may be something here for leaders as well. While we are leading large groups or churches, we need to look around and find the few who will go a little further with God. Why dis God choose these three? I do not know. Maybe they were the best. Maybe they needed it more than any of the others. Maybe they were just willing. I believe it may be a combination of the latter.
I really do want to go to the mountain. I want you to go there too.
Steve

That's Chores

I heard a story at the Arkansas Baptist Convention that made sense to me. A young man had gotten up very early, gone to the barn, fed the horses, milked the cows, put out some hay, and gathered the eggs. At breakfast he spoke about how hard he had already worked that day. His dad said "Son, what you do in the barn is chores, what you do in the field is work. You haven't worked yet because you have not made it to the field."

The modern church is very good at doing chores, not very good at work. Don't miss understand. You must do chores. Business meetings, encouraging members, church services, etc. These are important, but they are chores. We are not worthy of our calling until we get out into the field. Some churches need to do some extra chores because the barn has been neglected. The harvest is best preserved when the barns are in good repair. So fix those barns, do those chores, but then get out into the fields and do the ministry, the harvest, the work.

The Costliness of Compromise

I have been preaching a Sunday series through the Book of Judges. It is both interesting and heart breaking. Israel should be enjoying the sunshine years, but is instead weathering the dark night of the soul. The people should be basking in the "land flowing with milk and honey," but are instead suffering in a land of enemies and oppressors. At least in the wilderness wanderings they acknowledged God, but know they are going after other gods.

Now, did they decide to rebel against God? Did they commit to follow other gods? Did they choose to no longer be His people? No. What, then, brought them to this place? What horrible sin? What heinous crime? Compromise, partial obedience, failure to do ALL God commanded. Only of Caleb is it said "he drove out" the former inhabitants where he settled. Caleb, one of the original spies who said "yes we can take it."

Oh, God, give us some Calebs. Caleb was an old man by this time. He had seen much. But his obedience to God's plan was clear and resolute.

The time of the Judges will haunt Israel for over 400 years, all because of compromise. Lord, drive out from my life those enemies that divide my allegiance to you.

FOR THE MEN

I may be a pastor, but I am sure I struggle with the things that all men struggle with. Worth as a man, temptations, am I a good dad and husband? If I am the only one who struggles, I wish someone would enlighten me a little.

As a pastor, I do see how those struggles affect families. The church I serve has a strong Youth ministry, yet many of these teens come on their own. If they have a dad at home, they stay at home. I know that I learned a lot of my model of a Christian man from watching my dad and the many other men in my home church. Where are the models today?

I agree with Gene Getz that 1 Timothy 3 is not exhausted when it dealing with Pastors and deacons. These really are marks of maturity for all men. The most important may be the qualities that bracket pastoral qualifications - "above reproach" and "a good reputation among outsiders." We have seen men of postion in our own town suffer public failure, and now we see on a wide scale one of our government leaders brought down, reputations ruined. I pray that God will strengthen our Christian men so that they have a good reputation inside the church as well as outside the church. A solid reputation among their peers and among their families.
The hope of our church is for our men to be grasped by God in a new and fresh way, and I hope it starts with me.
Steve

Ouachita Baptist University

On Thursday I attended the Pastor's Conference on the letters of John at OBU. It was a good experience. Dean, Scott Duvall, put together a good conference for those who will teach the January Bible Study. There were two highlights, one was expected.

The first highlight was a presentation by Barbara Pemberton on comparative religions. She shared a unique way of discussing beliefs of other groups. She was extremely clear that salvation is only through the Christ of Scripture. She shared several firsthand opportunities she had experienced sharing the Gospel. She also displayed a genuine heart for students to be well grounded in doctrine so they will not be vulnerable to other religions.

The other highlight was the session on Preaching from the Letters of John. It was led by the new president of OBU, Rex Horne, previously pastor of Immanuel Church in Little Rock. I am glad he is at OBU. I believe that our Baptist schools are positively impacted when they are led by qualified men from the ministry.

On a Scriptural note, it was repeated by several of the conference speakers that when John says "But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another" (1 John 1:7), he would have been expected to say "we have fellowship with Him." That is true, but John is emphasizing that we cannot be right with God and wrong with the brothers. Our horizontal fellowship is an indicator of our vertical relationship.

All in all a good day, enjoyable, informative, and reassuring.

Fellow Traveler

SIMPLE IS GOOD
Do you remember your first computer? If it has been a while, let me refresh your memory. First, you may have had to make decisions about "text card" or "graphics card," color or monochrome, which operating system, will this monitor and this printer work with this system. Then there was software. You had to get it all separately, load it, and spend hours in the manuals to make it work. It was not uncommon to spend time on the phone with techs for a few days, call in friends, and deal with glitches for a long time.

The last computer I bought, I brought home, plugged in the color coordinated cables, plugged into power, turned it on, and started using it. Printer worked first time. Software already there. Simple. As a matter of fact, if IBM had not gone simple, we would all have Apples today.

Here is the deal. I am afraid that our churches are more like the old computers. Difficult. Not because of people's attitudes as much as our structure. Thom Rainer offers this definition of a simple church: "a congregation designed around a straight-forward and strategic process that moves people through the stages of spiritual growth." I struggle with how to simplify the church I presently serve. We move about as fast as the Federal government to a disaster area. We have to work through layers, committees. I want to move like Baptist Disaster Relief teams. They don't have to wait for lots of red tape, they see a need and move. Church really should be simple. Simple is effective. Simple is efficient. Simple is also dependent on God's leadership.

Got Jesus?

Do you ever get the Spiritual blahs, or am I the only one? There are times when I just seem a little dry. I am reminded of the Gospel account of Mary and Joseph losing Jesus. How did they do it? Where did they do it?

They lost him during a very Spiritual time (passover) at a very Spiritual place (Temple). That reminds me that doing Spiritual "stuff" is not a replacement for walking with God. As a pastor I am at the church building a lot, almost everyday. I read the Bible and pray everyday, but often times working on messages, etc. Activity is not Spirituality. How did they lose Jesus? They were too casual with Him and spent one day without Him. They assumed He was there when He wasn't. How often do we assume His presence and we spend a little time without Him. We need to be conscious of intentionally walking with Jesus.

His Church

I started a series of Revival Services at FBC in Hartford, Arkansas. If you do not know anything about Hartford, look in the Baptist Hymnal at the name of the tune to Victory in Jesus. There was a time when Hartford was the home of Gospel Music. That was just a little history lesson.
As I preached in this church today, fellowshipped with the people, ate with them, spent the afternoon with their pastor, Dr. Tom Harris, I realized again what a great gift the church is to us. FBC is not a mega church, or even a big church, but it is a great church because it is Christ's. I really enjoyed being with people I had never met. What a privilege it is to be a part of a local church. I listened to a man's testimony at lunch. He had lost his wife a few years ago in an auto accident. He is now the single dad of three teenagers, but there were tears in his eyes as he spoke of his church family and how they ministered to him. Lord Jesus, thank You for Your Church and help me to be a better part of it.

Walk With Me

What does God really want of us? We focus so much on what God wants us to be, what He wants us to do, but we focus to narrowly. First - What does God want me to be? HIS. It is not that He primarily wants me to be a pastor, missionary, teacher - God wants me to belong to Him. If I will focus a little more on relationship the other things will fall in line. Second - What does God want me to do? Walk with Him. God is calling us to a journey, the journey is the blessing. We are taught to be goal oriented. Like my Dad on vacation. The goal was to get "there." Mom wanted to stop along the way, but Dad was afraid we would not get "there." God wants me to enjoy the journey. I will get "there" as I walk with Him, and I do not even have to know where "there" is. I am trying more and more to learn to hear God's voice that says "Walk with me a little while and see what happens."

Traveling Through

This is my first post, although I have been following some of the blogs for a while.
